GMO’s and Your Health Concerns

What is GMO
GMO (genetically modified organism) means the genetic material of these foods has been altered by inserting foreign DNA from other plants or animals, even chemical pesticides. The GMO process drastically changes the plant or animal genome from what nature intended into a large-scale biotech experiment. The problem is that we know very little at best about the long-term effects of GMO foods on human and animal health, farming and the general environment.

Labeling
In the U.S., GMOs don’t have to be labeled on packaging. This keeps consumers unaware of their increasing presence in the grocery aisle. But this November, California voters may make USA history with the first mandatory GMO labeling initiative, Proposition 37. If passed, the law will require the labeling of all GMO foods sold to consumers in California. The European Union, Australia, Japan, Russia, the Czech Republic and South Korea have already adopted such measures.

Possibel GMO Dangers
A growing number of independently published in vivo studies have analyzed the effects of feeding GMO foods to animals — mainly corn and soy — over the course of their lives. Results are extremely concerning and indicate:

Protection
In the face of the dangers of GMOs, there are ways to help protect yourself. Here are my top recommendations for supporting your health in the face of GMO exposure:

Choose organic: An organic certification isn’t a completely failsafe protection, but choosing organic, non-GMO foods may reduce your exposure dramatically.

Support Digestion: Some in vivo GMO studies show that GMO foods change the gastrointestinal lining, causing increased cell proliferation, which can be a precursor to cancer. Reduced digestive enzymes were also noted, as well as increased allergies to non-GMO foods.

Dementia, The New Junk Food Danger?

Not only does junk food make you fat, but it could cause dementia. New research shows that our calorie-laden diet boosts risk for dementia, a memory-robbing disorder some experts now call “type 3 diabetes.”

Sodium Nitrate is a Natural Substance ?

The National Organic Program (NOP) would like to share an important notice regarding the use of sodium nitrate in organic crop production.

Since sodium nitrate is a natural substance, it is allowed unless specifically prohibited in the USDA organic regulations. Those regulations currently state that sodium nitrate can only be used to provide 20 percent or less of a crop’s total nitrogen requirement.

After the current restriction expires on October 21st, NOP expects continued compliance based on other sections of the USDA organic regulations.

Prior to October 21, 2012, operations must not:

Meet more than 20 percent of an organic crop’s nitrogen requirement with sodium nitrate.
Regulatory reference: 7CFR section 205.602(g)

On or after October 21, 2012, operations using sodium nitrate must still:

Maintain or improve the natural resources of the operation, including soil and water quality.
Regulatory reference: 7CFR section 205.200
Comply with crop nutrient and soil fertility requirements.
Regulatory reference: 7CFR section 205.203

A proposed rule regarding the use of sodium nitrate is forthcoming.

Many of us eat fast food more often than we care to admit, but how do you know if you are addicted to fast food or even just over doing it.

“Food addiction and drug addiction aren’t all that different.”

ALSO; constant advertising, easy availability, fast access and the low cost of the “fast food” figure in to the addiction or the over eating of this modern day convenience food group.
Fast food may include convenience store ready to eat food as well as most traditional drive-ins, fast food chains and processed frozen meals (TV dinners).

A fast food junkie can be defined as someone who fits into one of the following categories:

1) Eating fast food once per day means you probably are over eating and over dependent on fast food which says you have a “Mild Fast Food Problem”.

2) Eating fast food eight to twelve times per week means you probably are in the beginning stages of being a fast food junkie which says that you are a “Fast Food Junkie” and are probably suffering from mal-nutrition and possibly causing damage to your digestive tract as well as setting yourself up for long term ill health.

3) Eating fast food thirteen times or more per week means you probably are a full blown “Fast Food Junkie” and says that you are suffering from some type of mal-nutrition and are experiencing long term health issues (either apparent or hidden).

4) Eating fast food and /or standard frozen (TV) dinners everyday and almost for every meal means you probably should seek professional help as soon as possible. Professional help means seeing a doctor and explaining to him your past fast food diet and request a health check up and then see a professional nutritionist for a recommended diet.

Here are some suggestions:

It’s not easy to break the junk food habit but it can be done. In a nutshell, you want to limit your access to the foods that do damage, but still allow yourself the occasional treat. Soon, you’ll be amazed at how good – and how thin – you feel.

Out of sight out of mind. This goes beyond keeping the chips and cookies out of your house. It’s also helpful to limit the amount of advertising you see. The more fast food commercials you’re bombarded by, the more likely you are to seek it out.

Eat carbs, protein and fat at every meal. When you eat meals that lack one kind of food, you’re likely to want it later.

Call a friend. If your cravings are stress related, talking will help you deal with the problem. Once you’ve done that, you won’t feel compelled to reach for comfort foods.

Give in once and awhile. If you never have a treat, you’ll just want it more. So, it’s better to savor a bite of chocolate today than it is to wolf down a couple of candy bars tomorrow.

According to Dr. Sam Sugar of The Pritikin Longevity Center, food addiction and drug addiction aren’t all that different. Why? Because the hormones that regulate eating also regulate activity in the part of the brain that’s responsible for drug addiction. It doesn’t matter whether that part’s stimulated by cocaine or cheesecake. It craves more of any substance that made it feel good. Unfortunately, some foods are more addictive than others. So, you’re more likely to crave chocolate than you are broccoli. That’s because sugar spikes production of the body’s feel-good chemical dopamine. If you’ve ever wondered why those fast food value meals are so hard to resist, it’s because cheese and salt are addictive, too. So the challenge now becomes overcoming those cravings.

Final Rule Renewing Over 200 Listings on the NOP National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances

This just received from the USDA:

The National Organic Program published a final rule renewing over 200 listings on the National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances that were scheduled to expire this year. The rule also makes changes to the following substances (unless otherwise noted, all renewals and changes are effective June 27, 2012):

Only non-amidated forms of non-organic pectin, typically added to thicken jams and jellies, will be allowed when organic pectin is not commercial available.

The listing for iodine, which is used to fortify organic foods, has been clarified.

The allowed use of chlorine materials in organic crop production has been clarified.

The allowed use of lignin sulfonate in organic crop production has been clarified.

The allowed use of non-organic colors in organic processed products has been clarified. Organic colors must be used if they are commercially available.

The allowance for streptomycin to control infections in organic apple and pear orchards has been extended until October 21, 2014.

Effective October 21, 2012, yeast used in baked goods and other processed organic products must be organic, if commercially available and intended for human consumption.

Effective October 21, 2012, sulfur dioxide (smoke bombs) will no longer be allowed for rodent control in organic crop production.

Effective January 1, 2013, hops, typically used in organic beer production, must be organic.

Terms of the Arrangement. In addition to certification to the USDA organic regulations, all products traded under the organic trade partnership must meet the following requirements:

Organic apples, pears, and ingredients from organic apples and pears must be produced without antibiotics. Antibiotics may not be used for at least 3 years prior to the harvest of the organic apple or pear.
Products must travel with an EU import certificate (Certificate of Inspection) that has been completed by an NOP-accredited certifying agent.
Products must be either produced or have had final processing or packaging occur within the U.S.
